MEDICORPS, 1984 to present, building a bridge to carry medical knowledge between rich and poor

MEDICORPS is an international volunteer organization aiming to improve healthcare in disadvantaged countries and reduce poverty - regardless of political, racial or religious circumstances. Affiliation with medical teaching institutions assures maximum quality control of teaching and research efforts. Medicorps' mission is to promote wellbeing in less privileged countries through transfer of technology and advanced skills and to further the understanding and action necessary for a capable global health care system. In 2006, Medicorps will strengthen and expand its Internet Relief Network (MIRN) in Cambodia encompassing four major hospitals. More than 300 physicians in Cambodia have access to its MIRN serving the two major cities with a population base of 4 million people. Two universities in the US will be sending their residents and specialist physicians on training and teaching missions. More than 60 highly trained specialists volunteer as consultants for its network. Since its founding in 1984, the organization has engaged in a minimum of 4 humanitarian missions per year in 12 different countries and addressed several humanitarian emergencies involving large populations. Medicorps is a public charity under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code for its educational, charitable, and scientific activities (federal nonprofit ID #99-0231009).

The MIRN Program

Medicorps promotes the establishment of an international network (MIRN) of support with an Internet based partnership of local healthcare providers and Western specialist consultants in conjunction with young physicians-in-training as facilitators. The result of the ensuing transfer of knowledge benefits all participants and, most of all, the indigent population of poor countries. The goal of MIRN is to ultimately become an autonomous national program to aid the underserved rural areas within the country.

The Education Program

Medicorps places major emphasis on teaching in accordance with its mission statement. An increasing amount of hands-on training missions by Western medical specialists supplement the continuous education, of both the Western and foreign participant, through its consultation network. Young physicians and students, acting as facilitators for its MIRN, experience the challenges of medicine in poor countries and share their technologically advanced training with local healthcare providers. Medicorps’ goal is to have a continuous, year-round coverage of its participating institutions through university based physicians-in-training and allow local doctors to benefit from informal training sessions in Western countries. Non-medical volunteers teach information technology and English language in a classroom setting.

The Volunteer Program

Over the past few years a mix of medical and non-medical volunteers from 5 different countries have engaged in wide range of activities such as video production, data management, leadership seminars, computer literacy training, English language courses and, of course, medical instruction. Some volunteers have participated in several missions throughout the years. The experience of poverty and suffering with grace often had a profound impact on their lives, heightening the feelings of empathy and compassion.

The Research Program

Medicorps supports scientific research related to medical and humanitarian problems specific to poor countries and collects health and epidemiologic data for future research by both Western and foreign Universities. Its MIRN serves as an early warning station for developing epidemics and humanitarian emergencies. Projects are chosen for support, with the help of independent peer reviewers, based on their compliance with Medicorps’ mission, their fit with the countries’ health policy, and their potential for meaningful contribution to capacity building. The results of the research and subsequent programs are documented in audiovisual presentations and print for public scrutiny.

Public Outreach Programs

In the true spirit of Public Health Medicorps searches for the underlying causes of particularly disabling health problems in poor countries. Medicorps works closely with governments, IOs and other NGOs to increase the effectiveness of development programs and avoid duplication of efforts.

Public Information and Education Program

Medicorps disseminates information on particular health and humanitarian problems through its award winning video documentaries, public service announcement, news specials and magazine articles. Topics such as the impact of medical missions, polio, birth defects, HIV, health emergencies in large populations, civil-military issues and many others have been presented to the general public.
