CHALLENGE TO THE
CONSCIENCE
Medical and surgical
needs in third world countries are real. Minor injuries and diseases,
treated easily in industrialized countries, often lead to severe complications
due to the absence of sophisticated care in emerging nations. Permanent
dysfunction, even loss of life, is a tragic consequence in many cases.
All too often educated and skilled individuals are taken from communities
where there is no substitute.
PASSING OF KNOWLEDGE
One of the most
crippling problems in poor countries is the lack of even basic training
and education. Training and education is a major emphasis of MEDICORPS'
efforts, no matter how remote and inaccessible the area.
Teaching addresses
the core of the problem, namely the scarcity of skilled professionals,
by passing knowledge from one care provider to another. Therefore, volunteer
physicians, specialists and concerned individuals are selected from
around the world to heal, teach and document - men and women willing
to share their knowledge and skills.
A COMPREHENSIVE
APPROACH
MEDICORPS stresses
the training of health care providers in each aided country by passing
on new and proven techniques and knowledge. Some "trainees" are offered
further limited training in the U.S. and other industrialized nations.
The need for equipment
and supplies is carefully assessed, so that donations are distributed
for maximum effect. These efforts are documented and re-evaluated on
a regular basis. This approach aims to assure continuity in health care
beyond the one-time fix in every area reached by MEDICORPS.
