Other Encounters

One fateful evening, on his way to work, Ben's luck took a turn for the worse. Suddenly he saw himself confronted by a man with an automatic rifle. Robbery!...flashed through his mind. He had to keep what he held in his pocket to buy food for his family, so he resisted.

Next, he found himself with gunshot wounds on a makeshift stretcher in the overcrowded hospital. In the US, or any other more affluent country, he would have been rushed to the operating room immediately. Instead, here all supplies had been used up for the day in other emergencies. All there was left for him, was an intravenous drip to keep him alive a little longer.

His despairing eyes followed the trickle of his blood as it collected on the dirty floor. Friends and family rushed to his aid, but all they could do for him, was just enough to buy him a shot of morphine.

"Doctor," he pleaded weakly, as he came to one more time, "please, help me!"

"I wish I could", replied the helpless physician, "we justdon't have enough supplies today."

"How long do I have to live?"

"Not very long, Ben. The priest is on his way. Say good bye to your loved ones," answers the surgeon, as he turns away. His shoulders stoop under the burden of his inability to save a life in view of the abject poverty and sadness that pervades his hospital.

With his last strength Ben reaches out for his little daughter. She, however, shrinks back into the darkness of the room, overwhelmed by the terror of the imminent loss, the smell of blood and death.

Even as her father finally lay motionless and dead on the bloodstained plastic, andthe room started to empty, she wouldn't move, her eyes fixed on what was her support and love in life just a short while ago.

What fate may lie ahead of her?
